Pediatric Optometry CE
Pediatric Optometry Continuing Education Courses emphasize the examination and treatment of children’s eyes by optometrists who are specially trained in both evaluating and treating visual disorders in children. Optometrists specializing in pediatric optometry often work closely with the pediatric ophthalmologists in hospital and clinical settings for both routine care and in more advanced medical or surgical treatments. The vision examination by the pediatric optometrists often involves non-verbal children, which requires training in the evaluation of the child’s eye muscle movements, visual behavior, and dilation of the eyes. This dilation of the eye allows the doctor to determine if there is a need for glasses regardless of the age or speech ability of the child, and the doctor may view the structures inside the eye to look for abnormalities of the retina or optic nerve. When a child needs glasses, the pediatric optometrists not only prescribed eyeglasses but have special training in instructing children and parents on how to wear the glasses in a way that is compatible with the typical activities children participate in. Contact lenses can be prescribed to children instead of glasses around age 12. Overall, pediatric optometry CE offers optometrists additional knowledge and skills in successfuly applying their practice to children. |
